project life 365 | january

so i've been participating in a photography project-
the brain child of design aglow
my goal is to use nothing but my iPhone (although i did cheat once for 'dream')
and keep this thing going all year.
i feel creative

while they sleep | stacia hehenberger photography

i often sneak into their beds while they sleep
and take photos of them.
their littleness is so prominent when they're quiet.
i make sure to get the details
and then i stop looking through the camera
and just stare at them with my soul eyes.
i notice how they're changing.
how their features are morphing into boy
and leaving baby behind.
i listen to their dreaming noises.
cobe whistles.
finn snores.
it has always been that way.
i say prayers over their little baby-boy-bodies
and make grand wishes on stars that i can't see.
i watch the light fall on their faces. fingers. and feet
and i try to take photographs in my mind-
images imprinted deep within the folds of my brain.
and then i snuggle them close to me.
as close as i can.
sometimes they wake for a moment and i sing them back to sleep.
favorite things or sunshine or somewhere over the rainbow
and sometimes i fall asleep with them
as i did yesterday
and i dream of dancing and rainstorms and giant puddles perfect for jumping.
they unlock a joy in me
a trove of innocence that i'm not sure i ever let out until they arrived.

picking wildflowers | stacia hehenberger photography

 they both pick me flowers.
and they do it often.
and if it's not flowers, it a treasure of some kind
a feather
or special rock or leaf.
each one chosen especially for me.

cobe is particular.
flowers have to have a certain number of petals.
feathers have to be float worthy.
he evaluates his choices and thinks it through.
choosing is a big deal.

so when he finds
the one
i summon up my inner three year old
and try and match his joy.
and i thank him over & over
for finding me the perfect treasure.

finn is different.
he's all instinct.
he doesn't crouch down low to inspect. he gives the ground a once over until he spots it.

his flowers generally are rough around the edges,
and a little beat up by the time they make it to me.

and the joy for him is in the finding, not so much the giving.
although i never have to ask...
when he's loved his little treasure to pieces,
he proudly walks it over and places it tenderly in my hands.

Portraits in the Park: The R Family | St. Petersburg Family Photography

portraits in the park
was a seed planted by my dearest friend, tai nguyen of tywynnphoto.com.
after the sandyhook tragedy, all i could think about was how i hoped with all my heart
that those families had more photos than they knew what to do with of their loved ones lost.
and then tai called.
he said, do you have plans on the 30th?
and i said, no.
and from there we brainstormed and planned and networked and frankly,
worked our tails off.
and what we ended up with was incredible.
one park filled with moss dripping oaks and bathed in light,
35 families, most of whom had never had family pictures taken,
a handful of kindred spirits who motivated us, fed us and helped the event run smoothly.
and tai & i, two photographers who spent the coldest day in fl, probably all year
photographing some of the most beautiful people in our community.

here are a few of my favorites from the R family.
they bravely arrived the earliest (aka coldest) and didn't peep about it once.
and dad had even been up for 14+ hours after working all night!
and you know what that means,
mom had been flying solo all night and morning.

p.s. my favorite of the bunch is the top right.

happy new year R family!
thank you for braving the cold with me. it was an honor to meet you.
xo-

layers | stacia hehenberger photography

there's just something about layers of legs
and tangles of toes
that warms my heart
and makes me whole.
