layers | stacia hehenberger photography

there's just something about layers of legs
and tangles of toes
that warms my heart
and makes me whole.

it was time | stacia hehenberger photography

life is like riding a bicycle. to keep your balance, you must keep moving.
-albert einstein

his tricycle had been sitting under his fort for about a year.
rust had crawled over the shiny silver
and the moveable parts creaked from neglect.
but he decided in that moment that it was time to get back on,
time to try again.
so i carried it out to the sidewalk, grabbed his shoes and off he went.
just like that-
he decided it was time and off he went.

daydreaming of playgrounds | stacia hehenberger photography

i know there are a lot of you out there who have been wishing us well,
sending prayers, positive thoughts, food & treats, sweet messages and love in heaping doses.
i owe you all hugs & thank yous.
some of you i've gotten to, some of you are still on my list.
the truth is, we're just a little caught up in the chaos that is our life.
we're caught up in some major healing over here.
we're staying afloat but our nostrils are just above the surface
and that's just how it's got to be for a while.
so thank you. keep em coming.
we appreciate the village that has risen up to help us through this tough time.
and we're so grateful for everything we have-
grateful is a word that runs rampant in our vocabulary these days.

i'm working on a post that chronicles our first moments & days after kyle's accident.
but i'm mentally, emotionally and physically drained these days so
i'll keep chipping away at it.

for now, please revel in a few glorious film images taken last month
during a sunset rendezvous at one of our favorite playgrounds.
until we meet again (that is, the playground and us), we'll be daydreaming of sunset family date nights full of running & climbing & swinging.

i am no magician.

at sessions, parents always tell me what a difficult time they have taking pictures of their kids.
or they apologize when their kiddos aren't into it.
i always remind them that i have two boys of my own who have a camera shoved in their face 90% of the time and i still have our family photos taken by a professional photographer every year.
i am not a magician.
and for those parents who maybe didn't believe me, here ya go.
my very best attempt at pictures in front of the tree.

i am slowly and rapidly
learning to accept that nothing is easy with a one and three year old.
not eating a meal
not going to the bathroom
certainly not going to the store
and most definitely not decorating a christmas tree.

boys please, for momma, take a photo in front of the tree.
oh, finn. my little turkey, thank you for smiling so big. cobe, would you please for just one minute look at the camera. no cheesing. just love on your brother.

cobe! no! you're hurting him! we don't grab finn by his neck! now hug him and look at the camera for crying out loud! (it just became not fun for all of us).

cobe! just let go of him. nevermind.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.
-Melody Beattie

ahh, thanksgiving.
such a special time of year, isn't it?
a time when we all are humbled
and even the hardest of hearts turn their chins upward for a silent nod of thanks.
this year, i wanted to shout my gratitude from the roof tops.
but instead, i turned inward.
i journaled and baked good food from scratch,
thanked my lucky stars for the simple things
and whispered my words into the ears to which the thanks was owed...
my husband. my kyle. my one & only for better or worse.
my children. everyday & night & moment & breath.
our little house.
our healthy bodies & minds.
my renewed faith.
and photography. my joy & voice & vision.

happy thanksgiving to you & yours.
i hope your holiday is full of rest & gratitude.

weeds | st. petersburg, fl lifestyle photography

Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them.  -A.A. Milne

there's something inspiring about weeds when you think about it.
bear with me...
a seed rides on a gust of wind
from God only knows where
and lands in the dirt
or sand or crack of concrete
and it blooms.
now i realize beauty is in the eye of the beholder
but you can't deny the resiliency or determination of that little pod.
it blooms despite good food
or water
or shade or sun.
it sets down its roots for crying out loud and grows!

there's a lesson to be had here, friends.

take ten | cobe + finn

there are days when i can't wait to get home to my boys.
as in, i physically ache to get my hands on them
like an arthritic knee before a storm.
most days are like that.
today was one of them.
i called ahead to get a reading.
napped? check. snacked? check.
we had to make a stop at the grocery store before heading home
and i needed to know what kind of trip i should expect.
the forecast looked good.

and then the downpour began.
and it didn't stop.
it's still going, actually. even as i type.
but they're safe in bed with blankets, books and half-full bellies (their choice, not ours).

it's days like this when i need my camera most.

at the end of a long day,
these photographs give me something to hang my hat on.
or rather my raincoat.

personal project | take ten
take ten is a weekly, photo-storytelling project. it chronicles 10 random minutes in the life of cobe and finn. the goal is to capture them authentically. i will give them little direction and will do my utmost to avoid any 'cheese' poses. after one year, i will create an album of the images that will tell, what i hope to be an amazing story.

an election night letter to the boys...

my dearest cobe & finn,

yesterday, another monumental day in our country's history rushed past us. your dad and i did our research, reflected on our own values & beliefs, and thought a lot about you two as we made our way to the voting polls to cast our votes for the next president.

as i sat there watching the electoral votes roll in, i was nervous. not nervous for my candidate of choice to win or lose but nervous for the mindset that our country is in. we are so harshly divided. i've seen it on a grand level and i've seen it on an intimate level in the form of angry words and mud slinging among friends & family. it has no place. discussions about differing opinions, yes! sharing beliefs with open minds, without the expectation of imprinting your belief on someone else, please! passion and informed soapbox speeches void of generalizations & name calling, definitely! let's listen and understand that our country is incredible because of the differences of it's people. let's learn from each other. it's how progress it achieved. let's have meetings of the minds around our dinner table. let's talk about solutions and positive, forward motion. politics is long overdue for an overhaul. i hope it begins before you notice the toxicity.

we had our own election the night of the big one. we just told you your choices, handed you the chalk and let you decide. cobe, you chose Governor Romney. finn, you chose President Obama. your dad and i gave a big cheer for both of you, snapped a photo and celebrated with cupcakes.

we can't control what other people do or say but we can take some notes from your grandparents. we promise to teach you how we make our decisions about which candidate we choose and then let you make your own. and we'll be proud as heck of you for it. we promise to listen to what's important to you, period. no convincing you otherwise, no telling you something else is more important. we promise to always tell you the truth, share with you what we know and admit when we don't have the answer to something. and until you're old enough to have a D.C. worthy voice, we will make decisions that we feel are in your best interest. pinky swear.

we love you so very much.

p.s. friends, i promise to keep my blog & all other photography related sites party neutral. double pinky swear :-)

Welcome home, Charlie | Tallahassee, FL Lifestyle Photographer

i was so honored to meet this little boy.
he had just come home the night before
so you can just imagine the whirlwind his sweet momma & dad were feeling.
charlie is beautiful.
he's also very curious.
at just 4 days old, he kept his little eyes wide open almost the entire session.
i'm hoping he slept soundly after i left.
congratulations to sarah and brett
and the rest of charlie's family (he has a lovely, HUGE extended family)
who i know cannot wait to meet this little man.
here's to curious boys & a good night's sleep...

take ten week 2 finn | st. petersburg lifestyle photography

our life is far from perfect.
it is often messy.
and loud.
and there are tears. noise and tears a plenty.
these photographs remind me of the beauty that dwells in between.
having my camera in my hands reminds me to continue searching for it.
it forces me to see it for all it's worth and love it hard & deeply-
this beautiful mess that is our life.
