take ten week 2 finn | st. petersburg lifestyle photography

our life is far from perfect.
it is often messy.
and loud.
and there are tears. noise and tears a plenty.
these photographs remind me of the beauty that dwells in between.
having my camera in my hands reminds me to continue searching for it.
it forces me to see it for all it's worth and love it hard & deeply-
this beautiful mess that is our life.

personal project | take ten
take ten is a weekly, photo-storytelling project. it chronicles 10 random minutes in the life of cobe and finn. the goal is to capture them authentically. i will give them little direction and will do my utmost to avoid any 'cheese' poses. after one year, i will create an album of the images that will tell, what i hope to be an amazing story.

no-mess pumpkins | stacia hehenberger photography

i love a good pumpkin carving mess,
don't get me wrong.
but with two littles ones under three, getting out knives & carving tools
is just asking for time outs and a grand ole headache for mom & dad.
so we opted out again this year
(last year we finger painted our pumpkins)
and instead i scooped up these guys at target.

done.
the kids had fun. the parents had fun.
and the only clean up was the little backs to the stickers-
bonus.

happy pumpkin carving!
or decorating!

p.s. the cat kit also came from target if you're looking into skipping the mess too.

The Weber Family Sneak Peek | St. Petersburg Family Photographer

oh, this family is amazing.
they are just the right mixture of silly & sweet.
we laughed and ran and played with a certain noisy police car
while the sun settled behind the Dali museum in St. Pete.
the weather was perfect, the giggles were abundant
and the love in this family is warm and bright.

I Won't Hatch
by Shel Silverstein

Oh I am chickie who lives in an egg,
But I will not hatch.
The hens they cackle, the roosters all beg,
But I will not hatch, I will not hatch.
For I hear all the talk of pollution and war
As the people all shout and the airplanes roar,
So I’m staying in here where it’s safe and it’s warm,
And I WILL NOT HATCH!

take ten week 1 cobe | st. pete fl photographer

milagros.

in spanish, the word means miracle or surprise.
in latin america & mexico, milagros are religious charms
that people often deem sacred
either devoting them at their place of worship to a patron saint
or keeping them as a pendant, on a necklace close by.

milagros means miracle.

and while he never spoke a word about his ritual,
i'd like to believe it has something to do with miracles.

a pumpkin patch of sorts | st. pete fl photography

every october since i've had my babies
i long for fields of pumpkins,
still rooted and leafy.
i long for traipsing with dirt-caked shoes
and finding the perfect pumpkin.
and apple picking, yes! apple picking.
although i've heard it's not as glamourous as i imagine it to be.
anyhow,
there's no such thing in florida.
our sunshiny heat and fall-ish 87 degrees isn't conducive to growing pumpkins
or at least not vast fields of them
sprinkled with families in flannel and boots-
which is what i dreamed about.

so i googled pumpkin patch + farm
and this is what i got...
a little more carnival than farm for my pumpkin patch filled vision
but it did have its charms and one barn
and the kids had fun
which really,
is all that matters, isn't it?

and yes, to answer your question, i did coordinate our outfits just that way.
yes, i'm that good.
yes, i'm that much of a control freak.
and yes, i'm a total liar.
for the record, i happen to prefer a little uncoordination.
i also happen to prefer tractors not appearing to come out of people's heads in photos
but this was a rare photo op by a kind stranger and i'm also not that much of a control freak
to give the poor woman an hour long photography dissertation-
just 45 minutes.
kidding.
it was more like 15.

take ten week 1 finn | st. petersburg fl photographer

as a photographer, i've found myself influenced by blogs, websites, facebook.
i've bounced between styles, felt disconnected to my own work
and ultimately wondered why i should even bother picking up my camera anymore.
but i continued to press the shutter, i even started shooting film.
for me, film has been a great exercise in the art of photography.
it forces me to stop. to compose and think through my images.
i have found the artist in myself
and that feels amazing.

you may have noticed more personal work on this blog
and that's simply because i've been shooting more for myself.
shooting more because i love to shoot, not because i'm being commissioned to do it.
so with that, i'm introducing a new personal project starring my favorite subjects.
